After missing SXSW in 2018, I couldn’t wait to get back to Austin to photo SXSW 2019!
This year I was hired directly by SXSW to be part of their “Atmosphere” team which differed greatly from my past with NPR where I just photographed the music portion. On the Atmosphere team, my assignment was just what you would expect, to photograph the atmosphere and vibe of the entirety of SXSW. This included everything from the film, gaming, interactive and trade show portions of the festival. So if people were partaking in official SXSW activities and they were wearing badges, take their picture! And while in the past I worked for 5 days, this stretched for a full 9 days! 100% the most difficult endurance job I have ever taken part in!
As you can see from the photos below, I saw, A LOT. Some highlights included Tom Morello’s incredible set honoring the 100 year legacy of the ACLU, the world premiere of Jordan Peele’s ‘Us’ at the Paramount Theater, activations like HBO’s epic Game of Thrones house, K-Pop night at ACL Live, and photoing a sloth in a tree on the trade show floor, which honestly if you asked 10 people what their favorite SX highlight of this year was, there is about a 100% chance they would say “Sloth in a tree!”.
There are countless more memorable moments, but for me this year, two stood out way above the rest.
First, the headline shot above made the cover of SXSWorld Magazine that comes out every year during the festival! This was such a wild experience and a complete honor, especially being my first year photoing for the organization.
Second, I had the opportunity to teach live music photography for the first time during a mentoring session with 30 SXSW Crew photographers! The whole session lasted an hour and a half and was also live streamed to the crew’s Facebook group. The butterflies were real, but by the end of it, I didn’t want it to end! 🙂 A complete highlight of my photo career so far.
Now please enjoy a cavalcade of images from my 9 days in Austin for SXSW 2019!
